MASTERFUL MASTER SUITE

Busy working parents often leave their personal space till the very end as was the case with this professional couple. After renovating and redecorating the rest of their beautiful home, it was at last their turn for a makeover.

One of the biggest problems in the space was how dark it was. It was clear that the first order of the day was “let there be light!” - 14 pot lights to be exact. And when my client said she wanted additional closet space, the second order of the day became “let there be storage!” - for which I proposed taking one wall from the study for built in wardrobes. Which also brightened the space by covering the dark wall of paneling.

Custom made to suit her requirements the wardrobes were painted a creamy white and finished off with stunning chrome hardware. And new carpeting in the same silvery hue as the bedroom wall adds a touch of luxurious comfort.

Third order of the day was to get rid of the wallpaper and the faux wood ceiling beams in the bedroom. These were replaced with a silvery grey coat of paint on the walls and soft white on the trim and ceiling.

Despite the size of the rooms, the beauty of their antique four poster bed was lost amidst the dark bedding and other furniture. My client said she wanted the bed to have a more contemporary feel but because of the style of the furniture, I went for classic bedding in modern tones. The new bedding is a restful combination of silver and oatmeal but graphic black and white accent fabrics add visual interest and are neither too feminine nor too masculine.

Originally the plan was to find a new desk for the office but when my client mentioned she really liked the size and style of her current desk and that it was a quality piece, I proposed we paint it the same colour as the built in wardrobes. Same with the matching bookcases.

By replacing the knobs and handles with the same swanky chrome hardware (below) on the wardrobes, the desk and bookshelf have been completely recycled to coordinate beautifully with the newly built wardrobes.

(Still to come: original artwork for the bedroom wall; different table lamps for night tables; custom roman shades in oatmeal linen in both rooms and an office chair for the “new” desk.)

TIMELESS DESIGN

About 10 years ago, I was first hired by one of my favourite clients to redecorate her living and dining rooms. It occurred to me recently (while redoing her master bedroom) that I had never taken any decent photos of these rooms back in my pre-digital camera days.

At the time, my client didn’t know what she wanted but it was to be sophisticated, elegant and inviting at the same time. She mentioned she really liked the combination of British and Indonesian design. And she wanted red as an accent colour.

With those cues, my mission was to find just the right furniture and coordinating fabrics. Then the walls were repainted, crown moldings added, and a new fireplace surround, mantle and built-in bookshelves transformed the once ordinary fireplace wall.

Two series of new artwork were custom framed and hung on either side of the piano and that corner still looks fabulous. Proving that some classics just don’t get old.

In the dining room, I had the pine French doors stained a dark rich walnut to match the new furniture.

I remember at the time I was a bit nervous suggesting one red accent wall in the dining room - explaining that it would add warmth, drama and visually enlarge the space. They went for it - even before it was the trend it is now - and it still looks great (even with the missing chair under the artwork and the paint cans on the floor from the current project …oops).

Bottom line, I was kind of proud (and relieved) while working there again recently to find that these rooms still worked - from both design and function perspectives.

But it also dawned on me that I might not be back there again as I think the entire house has now been done. I’m kind of torn - as much as I love the work I did in this house, I still want them as clients.

Maybe they’ll move…

THE DOCTOR IS IN (STYLE)

I was asked to help resuscitate this doctors’ office waiting room from its last makeover. The first thing was to get rid of the sickly yellow walls and wooden chair rail and then try to make those ubiquitous black chairs look more interesting. First the walls were repainted a calming light grey with a slightly darker grey on the middle wall and the chair rail was painted white.

I looked specifically for artwork that had touches of black to make the chairs look like they were actually part of the design.And by using a series of contemporary artwork on all three walls, adding new table lamps to counter the fluorescent ceiling lighting and an interesting center piece for the coffee table, the room is, well, now more conducive to… waiting.

The receptionist area received the same paint treatment and an injection of much needed colour with new artwork and more attractive bulletin boards.

FRESH FAMILY BATHROOM

These clients are in full nesting mode and this is the first of three bathrooms to be renovated before their first baby arrives this summer.

Everything was renovated with the exception of the bathtub which was in perfect condition. A fresh white vanity with engineered marble counter, undermount sink, new mirror and lighting completely transform the space.

But what makes it special are the two rows of glass mosaic tiles on the backsplash and bath/shower walls. By using mainly inexpensive white tiles it was easy and affordable to give this bathroom a wow factor with graphic splashes of colour.

A contemporary and functional new shower system includes a rain forest shower and a handheld shower - perfect for rinsing off baby’s tear-free shampoo. The only thing missing (for now) is baby and…

GIRL’S BEDROOM (1)

This nine-year-old girl wanted a room with ”cool colours and circles” and somewhere to sit for her and her friends. By relocating the drums to the basement, removing the dated wallpaper and bedding and updating everything else, she got what she wanted and more. As you can imagine, she was thrilled with the results below.

This eleven-year-old girl wanted a modern, sophisticated bedroom that included a “dressing table!” My client had already purchased the bedding and painted the walls, so I had to work around the black and white scheme. This small but funky and functional bedroom will see this girl through her teenage years.

BUDGET BOUTIQUE HOTEL BEDROOM

These clients wanted a boutique hotel style bedroom with an Asian influence that was not too feminine. They also wanted to reframe and display four prints that had special sentimental value. With some help, I built them a custom headboard inspired by this wonderful cotton shower curtain I found – saving them hundreds of dollars in fabric.

Then I added some crisp black and white bedding (ironically I bought the same set as the one that I would later find in Girl’s Room 2), had their artwork reframed, found them a new dresser for a song in the clearance room of a major furniture store, added some accessories, and they absolutely love their new master bedroom. So do I !

BUY ME (PLEASE)!

This client lived across the street from a client whose entire house I had redecorated during an extensive renovation. When she saw the results, she called me to help her as she wanted to sell her house and hadn’t received very positive feedback from realtors.

Hmmm. Wonder why? Could it have had something to do with the fact that EVERYTHING WAS PINK?

New paint colour on the walls and fireplace to make it the focal point it should be, pulling up the carpets, rearranging all over her furniture (buying nothing new), inexpensive draperies and a trip to the dollar store (!) for accents and her house was ready to show (and sell).

DRAB TO DRAMATIC

This was the kitchen in my last house, which had laminate cupboards with plastic blue handles, bathroom tiles as a backsplash and powder blue laminate counter tops. Something had to be done - but on a minimal budget. The faux wood cabinets and drawers were removed, sanded and repainted with oil (which made them look less “faux”) and greatly updated with sleek stainless steel hardware from Ikea.

And new dark mahogany-like laminate countertops and stylish black subway tiles transformed the space into a dramatic and urban kitchen.

The upper cupboards above the stove and dated microwave shelf were removed and replaced with open shelving and a stainless steel panel - and a small vertical space next to the fridge became a wine rack.

ALL THE (DESIGN) WORLD’S A STAGE

I was recently asked to “stage” a two bedroom condo for a developer who would rent them out as apartment-hotel suites to a large corporation. I had less than one week to pull it off and it was a lot of running around but a lot of fun.

Instead of using the space designed for the dining room, I decided to make a little dinette area next to the kitchen bar. This was more functional for hotel guests and also allowed me to expand the living room space.

The choice of floor and shower tiles would probably not have been even my third choice but sometimes when you have to work with something, you end up with something fabulous that you never would have considered. After it was finished I loved the way it all came together - including the tiles. The “W” on the guest towel is for the name of the street.

The bedrooms are intentionally masculine (as will be the guests) which is reflected in the dark wood furniture and colour schemes.

This condo featured a spacious corridor that was perfect for a console table, mirror, glass sculpture and some artwork. Whether you are arriving or leaving, it looks great.

OLD EUROPEAN ELEGANCE

Last year, I redecorated these client’s master bedroom in white, silver and green creating a calm and elegant oasis. This year, they asked me to redesign their adjoining master bathroom. As the en-suite is part of the master bedroom, I always recommend keeping the same colour scheme in both spaces.

A new traditional vanity in dark espresso with a marble counter and coordinating medicine cabinet provide much better storage. And one feature wall sparkles in the sunlight with luxurious 1×1 inch marble and glass mosaic tiles in white, grey and a hint of green.

I choose a soft silver paint colour for the walls in the bathroom that is inspired by the bedding in the adjoining bedroom.

The soft grey and white 12×12 polished marble floor tiles are the same as the 12×24 wall tiles in the enlarged shower.

A chrome and white glass ceiling light and coordinating wall sconces ensure that everything still sparkles when the sun goes down.

The unused bidet was replaced with a beautiful and functional coordinating linen tower next to the shower.

Finally, simply framed black and white postcards of Paris complete the look of this “Old Europe” inspired master bathroom.

OFF-SITE DESIGN…

Last year, while working at a boutique in Outremont, I advised these clients on new (reversible) bedding that was neither too feminine nor masculine. From there I helped them create a fresh look for their bedroom by suggesting a new paint colour for the walls, designing a custom king size linen headboard with tufted buttons and piping and matching throw cushions (all by Ian Maxwell Inc.) and, finally, suggested that they replace the existing brass furniture knobs with pewter.

Many clients passed through the boutique while I worked there and asked for decorating assistance in all sorts of areas, however I never got to see the end results of anything so it was a lovely surprise this week to receive before and after photos of their beautiful bedroom with an email thanking me for my help nearly a year later!

2010 YEAR OF THE BATHROOM?

These clients took my business card from one of my bathroom suppliers and this powder room is the first of three bathrooms I will be designing for them in the coming year.

The inspiration for this room falls between beach (using weathered drift wood-looking floor tiles, natural beach grass between the panels on the front of the vanity, and glass and stone mosaic backsplash and wall tiles) and Asian (using espresso-coloured furniture, aqua-coloured glass counters, and the artwork and flowers).

An unusual combination, perhaps, but it works. Beautifully!

The old pedestal sink and top heavy cabinetry have been replaced by a contemporary wall mounted vanity and geometric mirrored medicine cabinet. The sink and faucet turn this already unique vanity into “Asian Art.”

This lovely and original “Asian-Beach House” powder room is my second-to-last “bathroom reno” of 2010 - which has definitely proved to be the Year of the Bathroom (and the Year of the Dog)!

Check back in March when I will be redesigning these clients’ basement shower/bathroom in a striking linear black and white marble.

BANISHED TO THE BASEMENT

At the start of my last design project (see Couple’s Retreat), the clients asked us to replace the toilet and small shower in the basement to be used during the extensive main bathroom renovation.

Had I known what was to follow (a spacious laundry/shower/bathroom renovation), I would have taken photos of the existing toilet and shower (which I believe nobody had ever used since moving in 10 years earlier - they were that bad). I did at least manage to get one once the space had been gutted.

When it came time to discuss colour for the basement reno, I said we could go “calm and neutral” or “fresh and bright” and I’m so glad they opted for the latter. A bright apple green on the wall is modern and works great with the charcoal grey washer and dryer and white shower and vanity.

For less than $30 of tiles, I proposed a funky backsplash using all of the above colours and the result just shows that a little imagination goes a long way in design.

Black and white architectural artwork and a round black mirror define the space as young and masculine for the teenage boys who have (happily) been banished to the basement.

COUPLE’S RETREAT

Having done most of their house over the past 10 years, I honestly don’t know who is more excited about this stunning bathroom renovation; the clients or me. Taking additional square footage from adjoining closets (to the left of the window), I designed this spectacular new bathroom with a free standing soaker tub (after convincing her to let go of the idea of a tub in a tile encasement), walk in corner shower, gorgeous chrome fixtures for both, and a heated floor. Bathtub, shower, toilet, vanity, chrome fixtures and wall fixtures all from Plomberium Pierrefonds.

They both wanted it to have a contemporary feel yet still harmonize with the rest of the house which has a lot of wood and character (see Cape Cod Cool) so we chose a 36 inch solid wood vanity and medicine cabinet that worked well with the modern bathtub and corner shower.

When my client first described the look she wanted, I showed her the tiles from a project I was working on at the time (see Spa Treatment) and she loved them so much she wanted to use them as well. However, instead of a traditional horizontal tile design in the shower, I proposed a vertical pattern that created a rainfall effect while visually heightening the shower. Interestingly, it also has an Art Deco feel which is appropriate given the age of this house.

Small mosaic tiles from the same series were used on the vanity backsplash and window ledge (which has a beautiful hanging glass pendant and loads of pillar candles for atmospheric soaking). All floor and wall tiles from Siena Ceramique and wall sconces and hanging fixture from Multi-luminaire Pointe Claire. The walls are painted Whispering Spring from Benjamin Moore.

Once again, the amazing contractor on this project was Gary Sharkey and his right hand man, Richard (who managed to do a great job despite the fact that one of the owners’ dogs took an immediate dislike to him and barked whenever he arrived and only stopped when he left!).

Soon to be added to my on line portfolio is their new shower/laundry room in the basement which was initially supposed to be a basic shower and toilet for the family while we renovated the main upstairs bathroom, but as is normally the case in the world of renovations, it grew into a full fledged project itself enabling the parents to have an upstairs couple’s retreat and the teenage boys their own great modern space downstairs.

CHEZ CARAMEL

These clients found me on the Internet after they purchased the ground floor of a triplex in the Plateau and realized they had a lot of decorating decisions to make. By the time we met, they were off to a great start by refinishing the floors and ordering a beautiful new kitchen from Club Cuisine et Salle de Bains BCBG.

At our first meeting I provided them with paint colours and when asked which laminate counter would work best with their new kitchen, I instead strongly recommended they go with granite counters and a rustic marble back splash from Siena Ceramique.

From there, my job was to help furnish and decorate the living room, dining room, kitchen and hallway. In this regard, I advised them in selecting style and scale of furniture, lighting, window treatments, artwork and accessories. They wanted to do most of the legwork themselves and asked me to provide them with images (below) of what I thought would work.

Together, we created an airy, comfortable and contemporary space that is perfect for a young, professional couple and Caramel (who, as you can see, fits in perfectly with his new decor).

They cleverly enlarged the doorway between the living room and a small, awkwardly-shaped room allowing us to transform it into an inviting dining room. A round table that opens up to seat six was the best option and floor-to-ceiling draperies (off the shelf but cleverly lengthened by Ian Maxwell who also made coordinating cushions for the sofa and a banquette with fabric from Shorts Fabric Center) and a sparkling chandelier (from Multi-luminaire) give the room a touch of drama.

I hope to work with these clients again when they tackle their their master bedroom, home office and bathroom.

What the clients said: Nous avons acheté un condo au printemps dernier sur l’île de Montréal, que nous avons ensuite rénové au niveau de la cuisine, du salon et de la salle à manger (à aire ouverte). Sur notre lancée, nous avons fait appel à Rebecca afin de nous conseiller sur la décoration de cette partie de l’appartement. LITTLE HELP GOES LONG WAY

About to embark on a kitchen renovation, this client did the smart thing and consulted with a designer about what colour to have the custom cabinetry painted (see S.G.’s testimonial). However, still worried that she wasn’t going to get the look she wanted, she found my website and called me for a second opinion. (Good thing too or she would have ended up with costly yellow cabinets.)

Even though she did all the running around herself and used her own contractor - and only called me a few times to advise her on cabinet colour and to select backsplash, counter, hardware, wall colour and find the right artwork - I think it really paid off.

This was a very small job for me but I am including it because 1) it shows that even a few consultations to help choose materials and colours go a long way and 2) it’s a gorgeous kitchen!

(Her next project is to give her old appliances a stainless steel paint finish with a new product called Thomas’ Liquid Stainless Steel.)

What the client said: After consulting with another designer on which colour to paint my new kitchen cabinets, I realized that her recommendation just wasn’t right. I was confident in the look that I wanted but very unsure as to how to achieve it. So I went on the Internet and came across Rebecca’s website. She came over and, after listening to me describe the look I wanted, immediately recommended a certain cream colour for the cabinets. It was exactly the colour I was looking for. From that point on, I consulted with Rebecca regularly and have been very happy with the results (my new backsplash gets tons of compliments!). Even when I had my doubts about the paint colour she suggested for the walls, I followed her advice and lived with it for a couple of weeks and she was right – it grew on me more each day.
